Good sound insulation is an important feature in the quality of home life and work, which also makes it an important criterion in buildings. According to a current survey, good sound insulation is one of the most important quality features of a house. 82% of the people asked are not prepared to economise on sound insulation. 94% say that good sound and noise insulation is "important", and for 57%, it is "extremely important".

Regulations and standards.
The standard SIA 181:2006 Noise protection in buildings was adapted to the increased need for peace and quiet of the population, the further development of international standardisation and the state of the art and declared valid by the Swiss Association of Engineers and Architects SIA as of 01.06.2006. On 15.01.2007, the SIA published a corrigendum to the requirements for external noise. The increased requirements are now mandatory for semi-detached and terraced single-family houses and for newly constructed condominiums.
In principle, the same requirements apply to major conversions as to new buildings, whereby the enforcement authority has the option of granting relief upon request.
The public-law requirements are generally laid down in the Swiss Environmental Act (USG). The Swiss Noise Abatement Ordinance (LSV) specifies these requirements in concrete terms. It requires compliance with the minimum requirements of standard SIA 181 - Noise insulation in building construction only for noise-sensitive rooms. Noise-sensitive rooms are considered to be:
- Living rooms, except kitchens, sanitary facilities and storerooms
- Operating rooms with longer stay of persons, except operating rooms with considerable operating noise.
The requirements apply between organisationally or legally independent units of use, such as neighbouring flats.
