Home Energy Management System

Maximize the use of self-generated energy

Prevent waste of sustainable, self-generated energy with HEMS

The energy transition will bring many changes to residential construction in the coming years. With challenges such as overloading the energy network, electrification of the heat supply and rising energy prices, it is more important than ever to handle sustainable self-generated energy with care. The Home Energy Management System (HEMS) offers a solution for this. By storing sustainable self-generated energy and using it at the right time, the user avoids feed-in costs, the energy network is not overloaded and we prevent the waste of sustainably generated energy.

Smart addition to the Click-mate NXT distribution board

The HEMS module is simply added to the Click-mate NXT distribution box from Attema and from there controls the connected building installations. The energy requirement and electricity production are predicted based on historical energy behavior and current weather information. This is combined with current information from the energy market, after which a scenario with associated control commands for the connected building installations is determined for each hour.

  • Save up to 20% on the annual energy bill with HEMS

Research shows that the annual energy bill can be reduced by up to 20% with HEMS. At the same time, it helps prevent overload on the energy grid. The Plug & Play module can be easily added to Attema’s Click-mate NXT distribution board and controls the connected building installations directly from there.
  • Achieve up to 30% CO₂ reduction

HEMS maximises the use of self-generated energy by automatically storing CO₂-free energy surpluses, for example in a home battery, and using the available energy reserve at times of high demand. This enables a home to achieve up to 30% CO₂ reduction.
  • Helps prevent grid congestion

HEMS reduces peak loads on the energy grid by intelligently controlling energy consumption. Major consumers, such as EV chargers, heat pumps or boilers, are switched on outside peak times where possible, or powered by self-generated solar energy. This keeps more grid capacity available for new connections and further electrification.

Continuous optimisation with AI

The HEMS optimizes the moment of energy use fully automatically, without the resident having to perform any actions. The smart energy management system works autonomously and is self-learning.

Based on the energy behavior of the specific resident, the HEMS determines an optimal scenario for the energy consumption of the building installations every hour. This minimizes energy costs. The Home Energy Management System limits high energy costs and energy poverty in social housing, thanks to control directly in the meter cupboard.

Control over energy management, while maintaining living comfort:

  •  A significant CO2 reduction of up to 30%
  •  Savings of up to 20% of the annual energy bill
  •  Avoid unnecessary returns and (future) fines
  •  Limit grid congestion via control behind the meter cupboard

FAQ

What is a Home Energy Management System (HEMS)?

A Home Energy Management System, or HEMS for short, automatically controls the energy consumption in a home. The system intelligently coordinates solar panels, a home battery, heat pump, boiler and EV charger. This ensures that as much self-generated energy as possible is used directly or stored for later use.

How does HEMS help save on energy bills?

HEMS automatically shifts energy consumption to moments when self-generated solar power is available or when electricity is cheaper. As a result, the home needs to draw less power from the grid and unnecessary feed-in is reduced. Depending on the home, installations, energy prices and user behaviour, savings can reach up to 20% per year.

Can HEMS reduce feed-in costs for solar panels?

Yes. Where possible, HEMS prevents surplus solar power from being fed directly back into the electricity grid. The system can store this energy in a home battery, for example, or use it to charge an electric car, heat water or control a heat pump. This enables residents to make better use of their self-generated energy.

Which devices and installations can HEMS control?

HEMS can be connected to major energy consumers and energy sources in the home, such as solar panels, a home battery, EV charger, heat pump and electric boiler. Based on the resident’s energy behaviour, weather forecasts and real-time energy market information, the system determines the optimum energy scenario every hour.

How is HEMS installed in the Click-mate NXT distribution board?

The HEMS module is installed as a smart addition to Attema’s Click-mate NXT distribution board. From the meter cupboard, the module automatically controls the connected building installations. Thanks to its Plug & Play design, the installer can integrate the system clearly and efficiently into the home’s electrical installation.
