St. Antonius Hospital, Utrecht

A future-proof hospital, built for the healthcare of tomorrow

St. Antonius Hospital decided several years ago to concentrate all maternity care at one location in Utrecht. To meet the growing demand for clinical maternity care in the region, the hospital has realized a major expansion. A modern care center has been built next to the existing building, with a focus on mother and child care. Two additional floors have also been added to the existing building. Installation work started early last year and was completed in April. To keep the project on schedule, pluggable installation was chosen where possible in collaboration with Attema and Wieland/Isolectra.

Sustainable and focused on the future

As a total installer, Unica Building Projects provided all electrical and mechanical installations in the new mother-child center. This included not only the light and power installations, but also the fire alarm installations, data installations, climate installations, rainwater drains, sewerage, sanitary installations, nurse call systems and medical gases. "To guarantee the connection with the existing building, some adjustments have been made," says Bert Fix, Assembly Manager at Unica Building Projects. "To save time and labor, the majority of the 230 Volt installation is pluggable. Only the route from the distribution box to the Attema AK2 cable box is traditionally designed. This also contributes to our client's sustainability objectives. Future adjustments can be made can be done easily and at the end of the building's lifespan, the pluggable techniques can be reused elsewhere. Nothing is wasted."

  • A fully pluggable system

In order to develop a reliable, efficient and high-quality concept for the electrical installations, Unica Building Projects collaborated with Attema and Isolectra at an early stage. "Our joint approach has resulted in a fully pluggable system, including cable boxes, flush-mounted boxes, power cables, lighting, sun blinds and medical grounding," says Robert Woudenberg, Sales Manager Installation and Construction at Attema. "All Wieland chassis parts, power cables and plugs have already been mounted and extensively tested in the cable boxes and flush-mounted boxes from Attema. In addition, a limited number of product variants were chosen. All configurations were devised in advance, so that fitters can quickly connect the systems on site."

The electrical materials were neatly pre-assembled in consultation with the wholesaler and delivered in mobile service units (MSUs). Special roller containers were used for the pluggable cabling, which moved around the construction site with the fitters. This also improved the installation speed and efficiency.
  • Innovative collaboration

"Collaboration throughout the entire chain is essential for successfully realizing a sustainable pluggable installation," says Mohammed Zaanan, Commercial Manager at Isolectra. "With Attema and Unica Building Projects we have innovative partners with a lot of willingness and courage, who together with us take pluggable installation to a higher level. The benefits of this synergy were clearly evident at St. Antonius Hospital. Technology, planning and logistics were perfectly coordinated, and all parties in the chain benefited from this, in terms of structure, installation speed and quality."
