Legislation and regulations
A fire compartment is an area enclosed by separating structures with a specified level of fire resistance. Its purpose is to prevent fire and smoke from spreading further through the building. A building may be divided into several fire compartments and sub-compartments, also known as smoke compartments. In addition, protected sub-compartments may be created within fire compartments and sub-compartments to provide an even higher level of protection against smoke and fire.

Examples of protected sub-compartments include:
Rooms for non-supervised, bed-bound patients, up to 50 m²
Rooms for supervised, bed-bound patients, up to 500 m²
Prison cells
Accommodation units, such as hotel rooms

Fire resistance and WBDBO
A separating structure, such as a wall or ceiling, has a specified fire resistance. The fire resistance of a building element is expressed in minutes and indicates how long it can withstand prescribed fire conditions without losing its function. The resistance to fire penetration and fire spread, known in the Netherlands as WBDBO, and the resistance to smoke passage, known as WRD, between two rooms or fire compartments is the shortest time required for fire or smoke to spread from one space to another. Article 2.94 of the Dutch Building Decree states that the resistance to fire penetration from a sub-compartment to another space within the same fire compartment, determined in accordance with NEN 6068, must be at least 20 minutes. In this case, only integrity against flames is considered. The WBDBO from a protected sub-compartment to another space within the same fire compartment must be at least 30 minutes. Additional requirements may also apply to smoke passage from a sub-compartment, or protected sub-compartment, to another space. The separating structures of a fire compartment or sub-compartment must therefore provide sufficient resistance to fire penetration, fire spread and smoke passage.
