Radiation Protection

Radiation-shielding hollow-wall boxes: the fast and safe solution for medical environments

Hospitals, dental practices and other medical facilities where X-ray radiation is used are subject to strict requirements for structural shielding. Electrical installations must not compromise the radiation-shielding performance of walls.

With ATTEMA radiation-shielding hollow-wall boxes, the protective function of the wall is maintained. No special radiation-shielding covers, lead aprons or other additional shielding measures are required. This makes installation faster, clearer and more reliable. The boxes are available in lead-free and lead-lined versions. Both variants are designed for safe and practical installation in radiation-shielding walls and can also be fitted retrospectively in closed walls.

Installation without additional shielding measures

Installing electrical systems in radiation-shielding walls requires precision. The specified protection level of the wall must remain intact after the flush-mounted box has been installed. ATTEMA radiation-shielding hollow-wall boxes provide a complete solution. The box itself provides the required shielding around the installation point, eliminating the need for separate protective covers or manually fitted lead shielding. This saves installation time, reduces the risk of installation errors and makes installation quality more predictable. Back-to-back installation is also possible, depending on the wall construction and applicable conditions of use.
  • Tested by TÜV NORD Röntgentechnik

TÜV NORD Röntgentechnik extensively tested the radiation-shielding boxes within a tube-voltage range of 40 to 150 kV. The tests show that, depending on the wall construction and the positioning of the flush-mounted boxes, protection equivalent to up to 3 mm of lead can be achieved. For detailed test data and conditions of use, see the relevant test reports at the productdetailpages.

Lead-free or lead-lined

Depending on the wall construction and project requirements, you can choose either a lead-free or lead-lined version. The lead-free version is particularly suitable for lead-free radiation-shielding walls, such as Knauf Safeboard. The lead-lined version is primarily intended for lead-lined walls. Both versions can also be used in other suitable radiation-shielding wall constructions, provided that the applicable conditions of use are met.

  • Lead-free, radiation-shielding hollow-wall box

    Sustainable, lead-free shielding
The lead-free radiation-shielding hollow-wall box is an environmentally conscious alternative to traditional lead shielding. The radiation-shielding composite contains, amongst other things, the non-toxic element bismuth and is safe to handle. The box is particularly suitable for lead-free radiation-shielding walls, such as Knauf Safeboard, but can also be used in lead-lined wall constructions. The box provides protection up to a lead equivalent of 1.5 mm Pb. Depending on the wall construction, protection of up to a lead equivalent of 3 mm Pb can be achieved. The lead-free flush-mounted box can also be easily retrofitted without the need for additional shielding measures.

    • Protection against X-rays up to a lead equivalent of 3 mm Pb.
    • Suitable for lead-free radiation-shielding walls (e.g. Knauf Safeboard).
    • Lead-free, harmless to health.
    • Can be installed in solid walls.
    • Quick installation without additional protective measures.
    • Back-to-back installation possible.
  • Lead-lined, radiation-shielding hollow-wall box

    Reliable shielding for lead-lined walls
The lead-containing radiation-shielding hollow-wall box is primarily used in lead-lined walls, but may also be suitable for other radiation-shielding wall constructions. The radiation-shielding lead is completely encased in plastic. This ensures that the installer does not come into contact with the lead component during installation. The box offers protection up to a lead equivalent of a maximum of 2.5 mm Pb. This version can also be retrofitted into a closed wall and requires no additional shielding measures. This makes installation particularly easy. And quick.
    • Protection against X-rays up to a lead equivalent of 2.5 mm Pb.
    • Suitable for lead-lined radiation-shielding walls.
    • Harmless to health; no skin contact with lead components.
    • Can be installed in solid walls.
    • Quick installation without additional protective measures.
    • Back-to-back installation possible.

Which version should you choose?

Choose the lead-free version when working with lead-free radiation-shielding wall boards or when a lead-free solution is preferred for sustainability or handling reasons. Choose the lead-lined version when the wall construction includes lead lining and protection equivalent to up to 2.5 mm of lead is appropriate. The final choice always depends on the wall construction, the required protection level and the positioning of the flush-mounted boxes. Always consult the relevant test documentation and conditions of use.
