AGRO Pressure Equalisation Elements

So that the electronics work in all weathers.

AGRO pressure equalisation and drainage elements prevent pressure differentials, temperature fluctuations and condensation.

Whether street lamps, rail vehicles or solar installations – they must withstand wind and weather, heat and rain. And this also applies to their electronics or electrical systems. Air pressure, temperature and humidity are constantly changing. Nothing is ever completely airtight. Many electrical housings are fundamentally watertight and dustproof (IP 68), but not gas-tight. As a result of heating – whether from sunlight or the installed electronics – pressure differentials build up between the housing and the surrounding environment, causing air exchange between the interior and the exterior. This leads to the ingress of moisture, which condenses when the temperature falls below the dew point. The resulting moisture often leads to corrosion and malfunctions.

This is prevented by the installation of AGRO pressure balance elements. Depending on the installation location, UV-resistant plastic or nickel-plated brass pressure balance elements are inserted. The most effective air exchange (circulation) is achieved by installing two pressure balance elements in an offset, opposing configuration. Drainage elements are also available if required.

AGRO pressure-equalising element made of A4 stainless steel

The impact-resistant innovation with a high-performance membrane.

Whether it’s traffic control and signalling technology, street lighting, rail vehicles, distribution cabinets in power distribution, or solar installations: they all need to be able to withstand wind and weather, heat and rain. The same applies to their electronics and electrical systems. Air pressure, temperature and humidity are constantly changing.

Some applications are manufactured from stainless steel due to its strength and corrosion resistance. AGRO has developed a new, innovative pressure-equalising element made from A4 stainless steel (EN 1.4404 / AISI 316L) for use in stainless steel housings (patent pending), which is unrivalled in terms of robustness and has the highest impact resistance rating (IK10) in accordance with IEC EN 62262. It combines high-quality materials with an innovative design and is fit for the highest loads over the long term – from demanding industrial processes involving aggressive cleaning agents and chemicals to harsh environmental conditions in coastal regions or on the open sea.

A high-performance membrane ensures rapid and reliable air exchange and delivers flow rates that are unrivalled. It is made of PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) and features pores that are many hundreds of times larger than water vapour molecules, yet several thousand times smaller than water droplets. Thanks to the membrane, which is water- and oil-repellent, a very high degree of protection of IP66/IP68 (0.5 bar/1h) and IP69/IP6K9K is achieved. The most effective air exchange (circulation) is achieved by installing two pressure-equalising elements in an offset, opposing configuration. The temperature range of -40 °C to +150 °C is another highlight of the new pressure-equalising element, which is unrivalled on the market and therefore leaves nothing to be desired. The range is available with an M12x1.5 connection thread. The membrane is RoHS- and REACH-compliant and free from PFOA and PFOS.

Plastic or nickel-plated brass pressure balance elements with diaphragms

  • A special membrane made of PES (polyethersulphone) has pores that are several hundred times larger than water vapour molecules, yet several thousand times smaller than water droplets. It ensures unimpeded air exchange and thus keeps the interior of the housing dry. Its special structure means that AGRO pressure-equalising elements are permeable to air but not to water. The IP 68 protection rating is maintained up to a pressure of 0.8 bar. The membrane is water-, oil- and dirt-repellent. The pressure-compensating element with membrane is also available in an Ex version for increased safety (Ex e II).

Pressure equalisation element with sintered filter

  • The coarser material structure of the sintered disc allows for a significantly greater air exchange. Extreme fluctuations in pressure and humidity can be easily compensated for in very large housings. The sintered disc is splash-proof and insect-proof.

Drainage element with screen

  • In applications where condensation is always to be expected due to environmental conditions, drainage elements are inserted. Here, a special stainless-steel mesh ensures rapid water drainage, whilst its fine mesh size protects the interior of the housing from insects and dirt particles larger than 0.2 mm. The drainage element should preferably be installed at the lowest point of the enclosure. To optimise water drainage, partially slotted lock nuts are available for through-holes.
