Electrical installations in radiation-protection walls.

Radiation protection for electrical installations within radiation-protection walls is particularly challenging. Hospitals, doctors’ surgeries and similar facilities with X-ray or gamma equipment must shield adjacent rooms, as ionising radiation is harmful. Every installation opening compromises the protective function, which must then be laboriously restored. Standard lead encasings around electrical installation boxes require careful planning, as retrofitting screening in finished walls is not possible.

Regulations and standards

National and international legislation, such as the Radiation Protection Ordinance (StrlSchV) and the X-ray Ordinance (RöV), has been enacted to provide protection against X-ray radiation. The latter regulates protection against harm caused by X-rays, including in diagnostic and therapeutic contexts. Structural radiation protection is specified in DIN 6812 for medical X-ray equipment up to 300 kV. A distinction is made between utilised radiation, which is directed, and scattered radiation, which is dispersed in various directions.

Technical principles of radiation-protection walls

The required screening (lead layer thickness) depends on the type of radiation, room category, tube voltage and distance from occupied areas. Other materials are specified as lead equivalents. DIN 6812 sets out the relevant values. X-ray rooms must be fully shielded against radiation. Lead-lined lightweight walls are frequently used; however, lead-free radiation-shielding systems, such as Knauf Safeboard, are increasingly being employed.

    KAISER’s innovative radiation-protection one-gang box protects against radiation used in medical applications, e.g. in X-ray facilities. Due to the high density of the radiation protection compound, both soft and hard X-rays are absorbed. The box is particularly suitable for lead-free radiation-protection walls and, thanks to its dose-reducing effect in the tube voltage range between 40 and 150 kV, ensures a lead equivalent of up to 3 mm Pb for the wall, even during opposing installations.

    The radiation-protection one-gang box is fitted quite simply, just like a conventional cavity wall box, into a Ø 74 mm installation opening. The wire entry is cut to exact size using the universal opening cutter. For combinations at the standardised distance of 71 mm, simply cut away the marked edge strip. Fully insulated through-wiring can be achieved using the straight coupling. With the universal VDE cover (Art. no. 1184-90), the box can also be used as a junction box. It is possible to enlarge existing installation openings from Ø 68 mm to Ø 74 mm – for example, in existing buildings – using the 68/74 centering insert (Art. no. 1083-99).

    The KAISER radiation-protection one-gang box, designed for use in lead-lined walls, protects against radiation used in medical applications, e.g. in X-ray facilities. The radiation protection material, with its integrated lead equivalent component, absorbs hazardous X-rays with a lead equivalent of 2.5 mm Pb just as efficiently as 2.5 mm thick lead. The wall’s radiation protection remains fully intact even during installation of installation boxes.

    Radiation protection certification
    TÜV-Nord Ensys has verified that the KAISER radiation-protection one-gang box with lead-containing functional component achieves a lead equivalent of 2.5 mm Pb in the range of tube voltages between 90 and 150 kV. This was confirmed by extensive test series carried out prior to certification, which clearly demonstrated that the wall’s radiation protection is fully maintained within this range of application.
